Science

We believe that:

  • Science is concerned with investigating and understanding the world around us.
  • Science is an integral part of life.

Science is necessary for all students so they can:

  • Understand the world in which they live
  • Value the system and processes that support life on the planet
  • Take an active and contributory role in their society.
  • Through scientific investigations all students can experience the satisfaction and excitement of learning about our remarkable evironment and technological world.
  • The study of science in an educational setting develops specific cognitive skills, understandings, and concepts.
  • Science provides a preparation for diversity of occupations and lifestyles.
  • Science develops students' skills in problem solving, analysis, synthesising, information gathering and research.
  • Science provides students with a knowledge and understanding of their physical and living environment and people's interaction with it, thus develop an understanding of our responsibility as stewards of creation.
  • Science develops students' understanding of principles of scientific investigation.

Core Curriculum

We have implemented the Australian Curriculum: Science. This involves much professional learning by all teachers. The Australian Curriculum: Science has three interrelated strands: Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills.

Together, the three strands of the science curriculum provide students with understanding, knowledge and skills through which they can develop a scientific view of the world. Students are challenged to explore science, its concepts, nature and uses through clearly described inquiry processes. These strands are broken down into the following substrands for teaching focus across all year levels:

Science Understanding Science as a Human Endeavour Science Inquiry Skills

Biological sciences

Chemical sciences

Earth and space sciences

Physical sciences

Nature and development of science

Use andinfluence of science

Questioning and predicting

Planning and conducting

Processing and analysing data and information

Evaluating

Communicating

Teaching and Learning Opportunities

When genuine connections are made with content and skills from other curriculum areas, Science may be integrated into cross curriculum Conceptual Inquiry units of learning.
