FATHER'S  DAY 

On Friday 1st September we celebrated our father's by celebrating mass and conducting a father's day stall after recess.







BOOK WEEK

St Benedict's students and staff celebrated Book Week on Thursday 31st August.  

Nearly every student dressed up as their favourite book character.

After the parade, the students worked on 3 different activities relating the following shortlisted books: Chip, The Patchwork Bike and Home in the Rain.




  


  


    


  


  


  


  


  


PRINCIPAL WILLOUGHBY

The student who raised the most money for the walkathon was rewarded with being Principal for the day.

 Willoughby had a busy day helping Miss Smith and then later on handing out awards at Assembly.

PYJAMA DAY

On Monday 21st August the whole school dressed up in their pyjamas for raising over $5000 in the walkathon.

Well done everyone.

 

  

  







GRANDPARENTS DAY & FIRST FRIDAY MASS


On Friday 4th August we celebrated our First Friday Mass and Grandparents day.

 It was lovely to see so many of our Grandparents come along to mass and to spend time with their grandchildren in their classrooms.



  


  


  


 


  


  




YEAR 5/6 ARTWORK

 

Year 5/6 are studying famous artists this Semester in Visual Art.  

Here are some of the artworks they have recreated of a collage of "Weeping Woman' by Pablo Picaso

KINDY GROSS MOTOR

ESCAPE TO EVERYWHERE

This term (3) in the Library we are 'Escaping to Everywhere'!   We have escaped to the magical world of Narnia.

  The library was transformed into the snow covered wonderland of Narnia where the children were able to experience the enchantmen of CS Lewis' imagination.




   


 

  




 


 

 


SCHOOL WALKATHON


On Friday 30th June all students participated in our school walkathon.

It was a fun day for everyone involved.

Thanks to the St Clare's students and parent helpers who assisted on the day.

 

 

 

 

 


SRI CHINMOY PEACE RUN

On Friday 9th June, St Benedict's welcomed some members of the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run to our school.  

We paused to pray for peace and then learnt the 'Harmony Song'.

Everyone got an opportunity to hold the peace torch and follow it in a run around the oval.

 

 

 

 

 



TIDBINBILLA EXCURSION

On Thursday 8th June,  Kinder, Years 1 & 2 went on an excursion to Tidbinbilla to learn about our natural environment and how to care for it.

They also learnt about the culture of the Indiginous people.  All students had the opportunity to throw a boomerang.

The children were so excited to see all the kangaroos, emus and koalas.  

Thanks to our parent helpers who assisted on the day.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

 

On Monday 29th May St Benedict's participated in the annual Athletics Carnival at Phillip Oval, Woden.

It was a beautiful crisp day and the children all tried their hardest.

Thank you to all the staff, parent helpers and student helpers from St Clares College.

Your help was greatly appreciated.










 

 

 

DR CAMERON STELZER VISIT

 


On Monday 22nd May, 2017, well-known author and illustrator, Dr Cameron Stelzer attended our school and ran workshops for all our classes.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and were inspired by Cameron's ideas and techniques.








FARMYARD VISIT



Junior Primary visited a farmyard nursery on Friday 19th May 2017.

They had a wonderful time cuddling, patting and feeding the baby animals.

They also got to see a cow being milked!



  



 

 





PUBLICATION CELEBRATION



On Thursday 18th May 2017, our students proudly showcased their writing skills to parents, grandparents and carers.


 

 



  



LOVE YOUR SISTER - 5c FRIDAY

 

On Friday 5th May, 2017 St Benedict's participated in 5 cent Friday, for the Big Heart Project and cancer research.

Our school raised $2,500.00.  Thank you so much everyone for supporting this Love Your Sister Campaign.


  


 

 


  





FIRST AID TRAINING

In term 2, our students have been learning basic first aid from St John's Ambulance.

 They are learning about what DRSABCD means and also how to apply a bandage and sling.



   




           


 





HARMONY DAY 


On Tuesday 21st March, St Benedict's School celebrated Harmony Day, with the theme being: 'Everyone belongs'.  

Many of the students wore a traditional costume from their country of origin.

  

 

  

 

  





SWIMMING CARNIVAL


On Tuesday 21st February, St Benedict's students attended our annual swimming carnival at Queanbeyan Pool.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION DAY

 


On Wednesday 9th November 2016 we welcomed some of our new 2017 Kindergarten students.

They had a lovely morning, gluing, painting, reading and meeting the Year 4 Buddies.

  


  

  




 

BOOROWA CARNIVAL

 

On Friday 21st October, students from Years 3-6 participated in the Boorowa Touch Football and Netball Carnival.

NEW READING RESOURCES

 

Look at the fun our students are having  reading some of the hundreds of new books we have just received from the Catholic Education Office.

MOUNTAINVIEW MASS

 

On Thursday 19th May  our Year 6 students attended the Mountainview Retirement Home to participate in the  Mass for residents.

During the Mass, students were asked to lay their hands on the residents' shoulders as a way of showing support as Father Steve anointed each resident with Holy Oil.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS SOCCER CARNIVAL

 

On Sunday 3rd April 2016, St Benedict's Primary School hosted the Catholic Schools Soccer Carnival.

The day commenced with Father Steve leading us in a very special mass on the soccer fields.

Over 1200 students from ACT and NSW Catholic primary schools participated in 202 games of soccer on 18 fields from 9.00am to 3.30pm without a break.

Hosting the Soccer Carnival brought people together that may not have ordinarily had the opportunity to know each other

 and we are pleased mostly for this and the sense of satisfaction that our small school community has been able to achieve something that is challenging even for larger schools.

MATHS MANIA

 

On Monday 7th March, all St Benedict's students participated in Maths Mania. 

The children enjoyed collecting data and collating it into a graph, measuring, distance,

 counting, racing with dice, shapes, card games, estimating and much more.

TERM 4  2015

 

WEEK 8

 

On Friday 4th December our community celebrated our First Friday Mass as a Giving Mass.

We presented Mr Don Jeffrey from the Narrabundah Chapter of St Vincent de Paul with numerous Christmas hampers.

Thank you to all who so generously donated to this.

After mass we held a 'Thank You' morning tea for all our wonderful helpers throughout the year.  We appreciate all you do.

WEEK 6

 

MOUNTAINVIEW VISIT

 

On Thursday 19th November our Year 5 and 6 students attended Mountainview Nursing Home

 and participated in a Healing Mass and then had morning tea with the residents.

The Year 5 students gave each resident a calander that they made especially for them during class.

DOMINICAN DRUMMING BAND

 

On Thursday 12th November, students from the Dominican Drumming Band, Adelaide attended St Benedict's Primary School and performed for our students.

60TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION MASS AND SAUSAGE SIZZLE

On Sunday 8th November 2015 we celebrated our final school 60th birthday celebration with a Mass and a sausage sizzle afterwards.

WEEK 3

 

YEAR 5/6 'ARTS TRAIL' EXCURSION

 

On Thursday 29th October, our Year 5/6 students participated in an excursion to Civic, where they spent the day looking at

and sketching the many sculptures that form part of the ACT Government's Public  Arts Program.

   

 

 

   

 

 

KINDY ORIENTATION DAY 1

 

On Tuesday 27th October we welcomed our new 2016 Kindergarten children for a mornings orientation.

The children enjoyed threading, painting, writing, gluing and listening to stories.

 

 

    

 

   

 

   

WEEK 2

  

CRICKET CLINIC

 

Our Yr 3-6 students are participating in a cricket skills program for the next 4 weeks.

 

 

 

 

 

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS NETBALL CARNIVAL

  

On Sunday 25th October a number of our students participated in the Catholic Schools Netball Carnival at Calwell.

Our students represented the school by playing fairly and enjoying the day.

WEEK 1

  

BOOROWA TOUCH AND NETBALL CARNIVAL

 

On Friday 16th October a large number of students from Yr 2-6 attended the Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival.

It was a very hot day and we shared the bus trip with St Bede's from Red Hill.

Congratulations to all our students, you were simply fantastic and great ambassadors for our school.

 

   

 

 

    

 

SWIMMING

 

Junior Primary are attending a Swimming Program at Kingswim, Deakin,  each Monday for term 4.

ST BENEDICT'S "THIS IS YOUR LIFE PERFORMANCE"

 

On Thursday 24th September all the students performed in our 60th Celebration production of "This is Your Life". 

 It was a fabulous performance and ALL students performed brilliantly. 

 It was a wonderful evening for all who attended. 

 

 

SMOKING CEREMONY

 

On Tuesday 22nd September a Smoking Ceremony was held at St Benedict's Primary School.

Smoking ceremonies are conducted by Aboriginal people with specialised cultural knowledge.

We were fortunate enough to have Richie Allen, Aboriginal Education Officer with Catholic Education to come and lead this with us.

The ceremony aims to cleanse the space in which the garden bed will take shape in our courtyard.

 

   

 

 

   

 

   

 

 

 

 

 

WEEK 9

 

YEAR 6 RETREAT DAY AND ARCHIBISHOP PROWSE VISIT

 

On Thursday 17th September, our Year 6 students participated in a special retreat day. 

 Those students undertaking the Sacrament of Confirmation met with Archbishop Prowse. 

 

     

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

SOLAR SYSTEM AND SPACE PRESENTATIONS

JOHN BURLAND PERFORMANCE

 

On Tuesday 15th September all St Benedict's students were entertained by John Burland.  He led us in song, expressing our love of God and knowledge of our faith.

The children certainly enjoyed joining in singing and dancing.

 

 

 

   

 

 

 

 

 WEEK 8 

  

KINDERGARTEN FIRE BRIGADE VISIT

 

On Friday 11th September Kindergarten were visited by the Phillip Fire Crew who delivered the 'Fire Ed, Fire Safety for Kindergarten' program.

 They taught the children about what to do in a fire, 'get down low and go, go, go',  and what to do if they catch on fire, 'stop, drop and roll'. 

They also learnt what is a good fire and what is a bad fire.

The children received  homework to find out if they have working smoke detectors in their houses and also to learn their address  in case of emergency.

  Most of them knew to call 000 in an emergency.

 They also got to go in the Fire Truck and then had a turn of spraying the water hose.

As you can see, they learnt a lot and had fun.  They enjoyed seeing Mrs Tomadini dress up in the Fireman's suit.

TOUCH FOOTBALL CLINIC 

 

All St Benedict's students are  participating in a Touch Football Clinic on Mondays for the remainder of Term 3.

Tom is teaching catching and throwing skills to the children, using the techniques of; 'Elephant Trunk' throwing  and using your 'W' hands to catch.

They ended off the session with a quick game of touch.

JOY BURCH VISIT

 

On Wednesday 26th August, Ms Joy Burch MLA visited St Benedict's.

 One of Ms Burchs' election commitments was to visit every school during her time as Minister for Education and Training.

It was lovely to be able to share our community and show her how hard our Catholic Schools work to provide a high education for our students.

   

 

   

 

 

 

BOOK WEEK PARADE

 

On Wednesday 26th August, St Benedict's students participated in Book Week festivities.

NETBALL CLINICS

 

From Week 5 to Week 9 all students will be participating in a Netball clinic. 

 They will be  practicing catching and throwing skills as well as being involved in a team sport.

SCIENCE FAIR

 

On Friday 21st Friday all St Benedict's students participated in a Science Fair.

NRL CLINICS

WEEK 4 

 

PYJAMA AND CRAZY HAIR DAY

 

 

On Friday 14th August, St Benedict's staff and students participated in Pyjama and Crazy Hair Day. 

 There were some weird and wonderful p.j's and hairdos!

Congratulations to Louis in Year 5 who was Principal for the day. 

He was awarded this honour as he raised the most money in the Walkathon.

   

 

    

 

 

 

   

 

  

 

 

 

MINI VINNIES SLEEPOUT

 

On Friday 14th August a number of students and staff supported St Vincent de Paul's sleepout to raise awareness of the homeless.

They camped out in the Library.

 

 

 NAO

 

On Tuesday 11th August the St Benedict's students were introduced to NAO.

 NAO is a cute, programmable humanoid robot that can help create unique, interactive classroom experiences.

The children really enjoyed meeting NAO.

GRANDPARENTS DAY & FIRST FRIDAY MASS

 

On Friday 7th August our students were joined by many of their Grandparents in our First Friday Mass. 

 The Mass was beautifully celebrated by Miss Smith and Year 1 students.

After the Mass, our Grandparents enjoyed a lovely morning tea in the Library.  After that, they then spent time with their grandchildren in their classrooms.

 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

WEEK 2

 

NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS

 

On Wednesday 29th July 2015 the St Benedict's students held a Naidoc Prayer Celebration on the school oval. 

 The students joined in prayer, Dadirri and each child planted a seed, which they will water and watch grow in the coming weeks.

ST BENEDICT'S FEAST DAY

 

On Friday 3rd July, we celebrated a 60th St Benedict's Feast Day. 

 We celebrated our community  and sang Happy Birthday to ourselves and shared in a big birthday cake made up of individual cupcakes.

We also presented a donation of $3000 to Lulu from Caritas Australia to support the people of Nepal. 

Mr Garton also had his head shaved due to the amount of money that was raised in the walkathon.

The remainder of the day involved a lot of fun activites for the students.

A great day was had by all.

ROCK AND WATER

 

St Benedict's students have been participating this term in the Rock and Water Program.

  This program aims to apply a physical/social approach to assist boys and girls in their development to adulthood by increasing their self-realisation, self confidence,

 self-respect, boundary awareness, self awareness and intuition.

WRITERS CELEBRATION

 

On Wednesday 17th June 2015, our St Benedict's students welcomed parents and carers to our second Writers Celebration.

Thank you to all our visitors who came to see their childrens work.

WEEK 7

 

YEAR 4 CAMP

 

Our Year 4 students along with Mr Siljeg and Mrs Thompson-Lang headed off to Sydney for an overnight excursion from Thursday 11th June to Friday 12th June.

The children had lots of fun and learnt many new and interesting facts.

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

WEEK 6

 

WALKATHON

 

On Thursday 4th June 2015, on a beautiful summer morning, our students embarked on our Walkathon.

  A total of 724 kilometres was walked by our students!

A total amount raised will be forthcoming in the next week.

A special presentation to Caritas Australia will be made also for the Nepal appeal.

SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

 

On Wednesday 27th May at 10.30pm all students gathered in the Library to participate in the National Simultaneous Reading Storytime. 

This year the story was 'The Brothers Quibble'.

On Tuesday 26th May all classes participated in a Sorry Day liturgy. 

 Thank you to our Year 6 leaders who did an outstanding job delivering the Sorry Day message to all of our students.

On Friday morning, 22nd May, Mr Siljeg, Mrs Tomadini, Mrs Robinson and a group of students met at the Narrabundah shops and enjoyed the walk to school.

 

 

 

   

 

 

 

 

 KENNY KOALA VISIT

 

On Thursday 21st May, Kenny Koala visited our Junior Primary students.  He spoke about personal safety and the children got to see Kenny's car.

 

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

KINDERGARTEN LANYON HOMESTEAD EXCURSION

 

On Tuesday 19th May, Kindergarten attended Lanyon Homestead for an excursion.  Whilst it was wet, the children had a very hands on learning experience.

On Monday 18th May 2015, students from Yrs 3-6 from St Bedes Catholic Primary School in Red Hill joined their St Benedict's counterparts for a 'Challenge Day'.

Lots of fun and learning was had on the day. New friendships were formed.

ANDREW CHINN

 

Also on Tuesday 28th April, Andrew Chinn came to the school to run workshops with the students.

  Some of the 5/6 students helped to write a new school song for St Benedict's.

After lunch there was a concert.  The children had lots of fun singing and dancing.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ANZAC COMMEMORATION

 

Thank you to Mrs Robinson and Yr 2 for their prayerful leadership of our ANZAC service on Tuesday 28th April. 

 It was a moving and respectful ceremony and a moment to remember those who have sacrificed so much for us.

WEEK 10

 

 

We continued our Holy Week celebrations in Week 10. 

 The prayer celebrations invited all to participate and live anew the events of Holy Week and Jesus' resurrection at Easter.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

PROJECT COMPASSION

 

 

On Wednesday 8th April, we made our money trails in the courtyard for Project Compassion.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS AND THE LAST SUPPER

PALM SUNDAY LITURGY

WEEK 7

 

MOUNTAINVIEW

 

On Thursday 19th March our Year 6 students attended Mountainview Retirement Home and participated in a Healing Liturgy led by Father Steve.

After the Liturgy the children served morning tea to the residents and chatted with them.

THINKFEST

 

 

      On Tuesday 17th March, the students were divided into groups and participated in a Thinking Carnival.

  The students were asked to think creatively with the challenges they were presented with and to work together as a team,

PICK A PECK OF PICKLED POEMS

 

   On Tuesday 3rd March 2015, Hugh Monro attended St Benedict's and presented his show of 'Pick a Peck of Pickled Poems' to the students.

  Mr Monro has been presenting poetry for 40 years.

  His favourite poem from when he was a child was 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'.  He also writes songs for Katy Perry, The Wiggles and Kylie Minogue. 

The children were very engaged and really enjoyed the show.

 

 

    

 

 

 

 

 

NRL ASSEMBLY

 

 

On Monday 2nd March 2015, Ash Barnes from the Canberra Raiders spoke to the St Benedict's students about 'eat well, stay well, play well'. 

  The students really enjoyed the visit and hope that Mr Barnes can come again.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

 

 

On Friday 27th February 2015, St Benedict's students participated in the Clean Up Australia Day campaign.

  The most rubbish collected was chip packets (78).

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

 

On Tuesday 24 February 2015, St Benedict's students attended the Queanbeyan Pool for our annual swimming carnival.  Thank you to the students who all participated so enthusiastically.

WEEK 3

 

 

FIRST AID TRAINING

 

 

This week all St Benedict's students have participated in basic First Aid Training.  Everyone learnt some new skills and had fun doing so!

The students learnt how to help an unconcious person, how to put on a sling, CPR and DRSABC.

OPEN HOUSE AND BBQ

 

 

On Wednesday 11th February 2015 St Benedict's hosted an Open House and BBQ.

Our first week back at school was very exciting and it was  lovely to see so many familiar smiling faces.
